FARMERS' MARKETS
NEW ZEALAND

The Farmers’ Market movement is about supporting the local food economy, giving consumers access to regional food and building and strengthening local communities.

Farmers' Markets
LOCAL food sold by the producers direct to customers

Farmers' Markets are a great platform for food producers to sell their goods directly to customers, offering an alternative to supermarket chains.

FMNZ is a volunteer association that offers support to new and established Farmers' Markets throughout New Zealand. Member markets benefit from mutual support, networking, national promotions, advertising and advocacy at a national level.

WHAT IS A FARMERS' MARKET?

Although the term "Farmers' Market" implies that farmers sell their own produce at the market, it often gets used by markets that resell produce.

How can "real" Farmers' Markets distinguish themselves from other markets?

FMNZ offers optional authenticity guidelines to member markets where vendors sell their own locally produced food.

3 GOLDEN RULES:

1. Primarily food is sold (no arts, craft, bric-a-brac) with exceptions for plants and flowers

2. Food is produced within a defined local area (e.g. 2hr drive or 100km radius from the market)

3. Vendors must be directly involved in the growing or production process of the food (no on-selling)
